Originally a negative label for women in Hong Kong, ‘Kong Girl’ has evolved through political and social changes to take on new meanings. Three female choreographers use totally different approaches to tell their own stories and to show their ‘Kong Girl’ identity with multi-perspectives.

Bird-Watching, Wu and Bleed-through

The (Hong) Kong Girls is a triple-bill consists of three pieces, Bird-Watching by PK Wong, Wu by Alice Ma and The Shift by Justyne Li. All three pieces have its own focus and style, but they response to each other and echo to the current situation coincidentally.

In Bird-Watching, PK Wong takes a radical approach to provoke the audience with her totally naked and liberated body. With unusual and aggressive movements, PK tries to challenge the “general understanding” of a female body from the male gaze.

Alice tells a story of darkness and imperfection in Wu. A lady hides behind the pretty face, perfect shape and lovely smile, sounds like a “barbie-doll”, who hesitates if she has a free-will. ABOUT THE PROGRAMME

PK Wong is a choreographer and dancer known for her provocative works that challenge sex and gender stereotypes from a distinct female perspective.

Alice Ma is awardee of Emerging Choreographer Award in the 22 nd Hong Kong Dance Awards and also The Award for Young Artists (Dance) in Hong Kong Arts Development Award 2021.

Justyne Li is an independent dancer and choreographer. She previously danced with the Hong Kong Ballet and Tanz Graz (Austria) and was a soloist with Ballett Bremerhaven (Germany) before establishing Neo Dance HK with Wong Tan Ki in 2010.

Bird-watching is commissioned by Tai Kwun Centre for Heritage and Arts and premiered in 2018 Tai Kwun Dance Season.
